What Is a CIN Number on Boats?

Understanding the Craft Identification Number (CIN)

The Craft Identification Number (CIN) is a unique alphanumeric code assigned to recreational boats. It acts as a boat's fingerprint, helping manufacturers, owners, and authorities identify and trace vessels throughout their lifecycle.

Introduced with the CE marking directive in 1998/1999, the CIN became mandatory for all recreational craft sold in the European Union, enhancing safety, traceability, and consumer protection.

History of the CIN Number

CE Marking and the Birth of the CIN

  • Introduced under Directive 94/25/EC (updated to 2013/53/EU)
  • Mandatory from June 1998 for new boats
  • Applies to recreational craft between 2.5 and 24 meters

The CIN was implemented to ensure every boat could be uniquely identified and comply with EU safety standards.

What Does a CIN Number Look Like?

Structure and Meaning of the Code

Example: NL-LIM00001G505

  • Country Code (NL): Country of manufacture (e.g., NL = Netherlands)
  • Manufacturer Code (Linssen=LIM): Unique 3-letter code assigned to Linssen Yachts
  • Serial Number (00001): Unique number for each boat
  • Date Code (G505):
    • G = Month of production (A = Jan, B = Feb, ..., L = Dec)
    • 4 = Year of production (last digit, e.g., 2024)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Is the CIN number the same as the registration number?
No. The CIN is assigned by the manufacturer, while the registration number is issued by local authorities.

Q2: Can I change the CIN number?
No. It is permanently assigned and cannot be legally altered.

Q3: What if my boat doesn’t have a CIN?
Boats built before 1998/99 may not have one. Retrofitting may be required for resale or registration in the EU.

Q4: How do I decode the month in the CIN?
The month is represented by a letter: A = January, B = February, ..., L = December.

Q5: Is the CIN required for imported boats?
Yes. All boats sold or used in the EU must have a valid CIN, even if imported.
